Dear County Executive Leggett:
This is to amplify the remarks I made at the Town Meeting at Northwood High School, January 24. I am requesting that the
decision to place the new Glenmont Metro Parking Garage on the west side of Georgia Avenue be reversed for two reasons:
The only notification of the WMATA public hearing on the garage that the Glenmont Civic Association received was in the
mail the Saturday before the hearing was held on Wednesday (3 days). We frequently receive communication from the
County Council, so they are well aware of our association and our address.
Secondly, in early May the T&E Committee voted on its recommendation to locate the garage on the west side, in a residential
neighborhood, and the Council voted on the west side location on May 9. This was before the time to provide written
testimony had closed. To me this smells of "back room deals" with the decision perhaps made even before the "public
hearing" was held, and would seem to reflect a total lack of respect for our Glenmont citizens. How can the subject be
adequately studied and analyzed before all the testimony has been given?
I urge you not to fund this project and consider the deleterious impact it will have in our residential neighborhood. What is the use of
formulating sector plans if the Council arbitrarily decides that they can be overridden against the recommendation of the planning
board and other organizations?
Sincerely,
Laura C. McAteer
