DID YOU KNOW?
- Montgomery County plans to build this 1200 car parking garage along Georgia Avenue in the
west side residential neighborhood and green space. The garage would be built near the west side
Glenmont Metro entrance.
- This structure will visually dominate all of Glenmont. Its measuremeants are as follows:
- length, 350 feet; longer than a football field.
- height, 65 feet (six levels) of parking and 75 foot towers;plus garish lights on high poles..
- width, 185 feet; wider than a football field.
- Beside the negative visual impact this garage will have on Glenmont,it will also harm
Glenmont residential and commercial areas by bring 1200 more commuters cars to Glenmont. .
These cars will further clog up neighbhorhood roads and cause more polluted air that we breathe.
OPPOSE THIS GARAGE
HERE IS THE TIMELINE ON GARAGE
- April 26, 2006. WMATA held a public hearing in Rockville. (The Glenmont Civic
Association did not receive any official notice of this meeting and only learned of the hearing a
few days before it occurred). At the hearing, six people, four of whom were County Officials,
spoke in favor of the west side location, 10 spoke against the west side, and twenty seven
favored putting the garage on the east side near the present garage. Vote tally: 2 in favor, 37
against.
- April 27, 2006 The Montgomery County Planning board voted 5 to 0 against placement on
the west side, and favored the east side location, where the present garage is now located.
- May 8, 2006 The County Transportation and Environment Committee (T&E), chaired by
Councilwoman Floreen, voted to place the garage on the west side.
- May 9, 2006 The County Council approved the west side location, but said that the
community would be involved in improving the appearance, since it was very ugly.
- November 13, 2006 Meeting called by Gary Erenrich and held at Mid County Regional
Office. Three community members were present as well as the director and assistant director of
the Mid County Regional Office. We were presented with three drawings and informed that we
could make comments, but that the design was going forward for voting on by the T&E
committee on November 27, and by the full Council on November 28. This was the extent of the
"community involvement".
- November 14-27 Intensive letter writing and e-mail campaign opposing the garage and lack
of community participation in its design.
- November 27, 2006 The T&E Committee voted to recommend increasing funds for
planned garage, but with instructions to improve its design.
- November 28, 2006 The County Council increased the funding, but again with
instructions to involve the community in the design. They further stated that the design had to go
to the Montgomery Coounty Planning Board for a mandatory referral prior to final design going
forward.
As of now, there still has been no community involvement, although we have been told there will be a
meeting in the near future.
